We are told over and over again that Shopping = Stuff = Happiness. But does it really? Should it?
I for one just don't buy it...hence this blog following my quest to overcome my shopaholic tendencies to become a more conscious and sustainable consumer.

Maybe I Need These...

Yeaaaaahhhhhh...probably not so much of a need, which is exactly why I resisted.

Karma Yoga Tank on Beyond the Rack. $19.99 from $70.
Made in Canada, which I can deal with...close enough to the USA and better than CHINA!

Karma Yoga Tank on Beyond the Rack. $24.99 from $60.
Made in Canada.

Sweater on Beyond the Rack. $24.99 from $45.
Would look cute with leggings (my new obsession)...BUT country of origina = China. FAIL.

Studded Leggings on Beyond the Rack. $14 from $53
Country of origin = China. Fail.

Sparkly Leggings on Beyond the Rack. $14 from $53
Country of origin = China. Fail.

Patagonia boots on Steap and Cheap. $69.99 from $160.
I'm not going to lie. I still really want these. :(

Weekend Damages (1/29 - 1/30)

Saturday
  • $46.43 - Roche Brothers (supplies for baking madness)
  • $40 - Pamper Me Skin Care in Wakefield, MA (using up a very old voucher for facials with Court)
  • $28.68 - CVS (more randomness and killing time while Court was getting her facial)
  • $21.23 - Gone to the Dogs in Wakefield, MA (bought Maggie and adorable  toy dragon and this horrific 3' long stick of beef...she loves it...again killing time while Court was getting her facial)
Sunday
  • $0
Clearly I got a little carried away on Saturday. Having some free time to peruse a new town isn't such a good thing for me. BUT if you're ever in Wakefield I recommend stopping in the Gone to the Dogs Dog Boutique. They had some really adorable stuff and the people were so nice.

P.S. - I realize I still haven't posted the breakdown from December...one of these days (like in the next couple of weeks before I leave for India and lay this blog to rest I will do that, promise)

Wednesday - Friday Damages (1/26 -1/28)

Wednesday

  • $31.17 - CVS (Theraflu and other randomness)
I've been feeling a little under the weather. Nothing seriously, just a scratchy throat. So I picked up some Theraflu, I happen to think the apple cinnamon flavored one is delicious...

Thursday
  • $0
Friday
  • $15 - Jasmere (As mentioned in my last post)
  • $25 - Dana Farber Foundation (donation for a long lost friend running in the Boston Marathon)
  • $14ish - Boston Convention Center (went to see the FabFour, a Beatles cover band with Aaron's mom who was in town for a dental convention)

      Friday, January 28

      New Love

I was recently turned onto a new website by my pal Court, and let me tell you...it's wonderful. It's called Jasmere. While I could tell you how the site works and what they stand for...it's just so much easier to copy and paste it straight from their site. :)

"Jasmere seeks out lesser-known specialty retailers that deserve national attention. Our small team of New York, Los Angeles and Washington, DC- based shopaholics personally tests every product we feature, using jasmere's negotiating power to offer you an exclusive discount. But don't let the low prices fool you. Every merchant we feature on jasmere meets our highest standards of quality. You may not have heard of these websites, but you can be sure their products and services are the best around. We guarantee it."

Excuse me? Lesser known retailers? What now? Sounds perfect for what I'm trying to accomplish here! PLUS so far what I've seen on their site has been very environmentally minded, not to mention fabulous. For example they had reusable shopping bags that packed down to little balls so you could keep them in your purse (I passed b/c I already have two that I carry around with me), and today they had reusable snack/sandwich bags from Semilla, which I am totally obsessed with...so of course I bought the voucher! I implore you to do the same, so we all get a better deal on them!

A friend of mine at Antioch had these little beauties and I loved them. I planned on sewing myself some, but you know how that goes...I never got around to it. So I figure I'll buy  myself a set and then hopefully that will prompt me to make some more. Best gift ever for all those new moms out there right (and there seem to be more and more of those in my life).

Side note...I was looking through the frequently asked questions portion of their site and this caught my eye...

I love you guys. You have changed my life. Can I buy you a pizza?

Hey, we're working out of love.  No need to send pizza.  But we do like pizza.  Broccoli happens to be a favorite, but we've been known to indulge in a bit of the 'roni as well.

Our address for pizza delivery purposes is:
      2813 Covington Rd
      Silver Spring MD

We happen to like this place a lot.  Make it a deep dish, and we may just toss some jasmere dollars in your account.

AND they have a sense of humor...SOLD!

      Theme Party Part Tres

I apologize for the belated nature of this post. It took me a while to get around to pulling the pictures of my swap party haul off of my camera.

Well let's get right to it. The third installation of Meghan and Jen's famous swap party was yet another huge success. I once again showed up with FAR more than the required 10 items (picture three large reusable shopping bags and a under the bed storage bin crammed full of goods...Court, thanks for helping me carry it all!), BUT much to my surprise, and yours I'm sure...I did NOT come home with nearly as much as I brought! That my friends is what we call growth. I even recall myself saying, "Oooh I like that, but I don't need it." I KNOW! Amazing.

      Anyways, here's what I got...
      • Fabulous fringy olive-ish colored boots (80%20...I'm guessing that's the brand?? Never heard of it)
      • Eggplant like colored top (Mossimo)
      • Orange sleeveless sweater (Banana Republic...I think)
      • Lime green polo sweater (might be heading back to the next party...it's a little short)
      • Green corduroy jacket (Ann Taylor Loft)
      • Black t-shirt (Banana Republic)
      • Black sparkly top (I envision I'll be wearing it to one of the next bachelorette parties)
      • Nike t-shirt
      • White t-shirt with little silver skulls and roses on it (Nothing like Ed Hardy, give me more credit)
      • Lime/yellow colored capris (just the right length to cover my knees in India)
      • Two pairs of earrings (I don't wear earrings normally so we'll see if these ever get worn, they may be coming back with me to the next swap)
      • Two pairs of work pants (Express...I may try to sew some of the bell bottominess out of them, we'll see if my sewing skills feel up to the task)
      • 3 Large Wooden Bracelets

So maybe it sounds like a lot but it all fit into one compact little shopping bag! My goal for the next party is to not be the girl who rocks in with a small Uhaul worth of things. It's good to have goals.

        • S10.35 - CVS
        I have exciting news...brace yourself...

        MINI EGGS ARE BACK!!!!!
        and I already bought some.
(This is a picture of the biggest ever Cadbury Mini Egg score. D and I purchased these beauties going on three years ago while we were in Seattle for a wedding and to celebrate my birthday ...don't ask why I still have this picture...I have no answer)

        Monday, January 24

        Weekend Damages (1/21 - 1/23)

        Friday
        • $116.98 - Burton's Ski Shop (mittens with liners for Aaron and I...going to be freezing skiing tomorrow)

This was money well spent. My hands have never been so warm while skiing.

        Saturday
        • $30 - Various food items at Stratton (I pretty much just hand a bit of cash to Aaron whenever we go anywhere b/c he invariably ends up paying for everything, and it makes me feel better to contribute a little...little being the key word in that run-on sentence)
        Sunday
        • $0
Back to Mass and back to reality. :( On the bright side we did get to pick up Maggie from my parents today. Judging from her reaction when she saw us...she missed us...a lot. Clearly she enjoys being the only dog and having full run of her humans.

Also on the bright side we got home in time to watch the Jets lose (YAY!) and for me to make some pretty delicious cupcakes. This week I whipped up Raspberry Jam, Citrus Tea Cakes. They're delicious, but next time I think I'll add a little less jam...they're pretty gooey.

        Thursday Damages (1/20)

        • $148.75 - Patagonia
I finally got that coat...my post this morning prompted it...and while I was browsing around the Patagonia site I picked up a new pair of ski socks too. And yes, I actually do need a new pair. I use them for work and for play and mine are getting a bit worn out.

Torrent Jacket. On sale for $83.30 from $119.

Ski Socks. On sale for $12.95 from $18.95

        Vitaliti Skirt. $52.50 from $75.
The perfect length to keep my knees safely covered while in India. As it turns out I don't have all that much clothing that covers my knees.

Side note...did you know that Patagonia has a blog? I didn't...it's actually pretty good. Entirely what you would expect, but that's not a bad thing.

        Thursday, January 20

        Soon to be Purchased...

So there are a number of items I am anticipating needing to purchase for my upcoming India trip. There's just no getting around them...unless of course any of you out there have any of my needed items and would be willing to let me borrow it/them for a month?

        Here's what I think I'll need...

A power converter. I fried my hairdryer using the one I have in Greece, and while I'm sure it was just a user error...I'm afraid to kill another appliance in India....namely my ipad. I would cry. A lot.
This would be the perfect item to lend me by the way :)

Going to need one more (at least) large memory stick for the old camera. I don't want to run out of memory and while I can download some of them off my camera and onto my ipad, I don't want to completely fill up it's memory with pictures.

STILL need a raincoat. I suppose I should just break down and buy one already.

New pajama bottoms. I suppose I'm going to need something to wear to sleep that isn't completely ratty and unpresentable, seeing as how I won't just be hanging out in the safety of my own home.

I'm going to need to make a serious trip to CVS to stock up on the necessary over the counter remedies. Some (I'll refrain from naming which ones) are a necessity when traveling to the third world.
This one maybe not so lendable :)

I'm sure there will be more things I think of, but these are what come to mind at the moment. My trip is less than a month away now! AHHHHH!

        Monday - Wednesday Damages (1/17-1/19)

        Monday
        • $0
        Tuesday
        • $55 - Living Social (gift baskets from Whole Foods for presents)
        • $145 - Cross Cultural Solutions (not really my $$...was being held from Christmas for this very purpose, so technically it was gifts)
I paid off the balance of my volunteer trip to India today!!! AND I got my shots, so I'm really ready to go now. The pain in my arm (thank you needles) is really making this real.

        Wednesday
        • $0
Today I managed to spend nothing even though I went to the mall to exchange some things from Christmas. I wasn't really in love with too much though and ended up only getting one replacement item and saving the rest for another time. THAT my friends is what we call growth. :)

          My Blogging Days are Numbered

Well dear readers, the time has come to lay this blog to rest. Well it's almost come. If you'll recall I started this here blog as a way to keep myself on track with my 2010 New Year's Resolution...which was to become a more conscious consumer and to generally just stop spending money like it was going out of style.BUT technically I didn't start my resolution until February, so I plan on keeping at it until then (and knowing me it will take me a while to wrap it up...so you can expect to hear from me until about mid February).

          Weekend Damages (1/15 - 1/16)

          Saturday
Perhaps getting back into a more regular yoga routine will cure my knees...doubtful, but it's worth a shot.

          Sunday
          • $16.30 - Petsmart (nail grinding...which is SO much better than clipping, and a sock monkey toy that Aaron insisted Maggie needed...he has an unhealthy obsession with sock monkeys)
          • $6.87 - REI (winter gear for our ski trip to Stratton this weekend...Aaron bought me a face mask but it was too big so I returned it and got a full head cover beast. I will be warm)

          Thursday & Friday Damages (1/13 - 1/14)

          Thursday

          Friday
          • $59.81 - BJ's (odds and ends...including an industrial size bottle of vanilla extract...oh the baking that will be done!)
          Dear reader,

Tomorrow night marks a momentous occasion...another swap party! So stay tuned to find out what fabulous items I come home with. I will be bringing a small carload of stuff to the party, hopefully I don't come home with quite as much as I have in the past.

          Thursday, January 13

          Monday - Wednesday Damages (1/10-1/12)

          Monday
          • $0
          Tuesday
          • $25.60 - Fedex (sent off my application for my Visa to India!!!)
          • $94.00 - VISA
Tonight I took Sam to a Boy and Girls Club event where we got to meet Kevin Youkilis. She had a ball, it was a successful evening.

          Wednesday
          • $0
Today was a snow day. Oh how I love snow days...here's a little glimpse into how I spent my day (probably should have focused on getting a tad more work done...but oh well)

There was snowshoeing. Well for us...Maggie just trucked along on naked paws.

           There were snowy puppies.

There were puppy naps by the door so she could keep an eye on the plow and people shoveling.

AND there were some insanely well decorated neon blue cupcakes.
I give you shag carpeting and basket weave.

          Sunday, January 9

          Weekend Damages (1/10 - 1/11)

          Saturday
          • $0 - Trader Joe's (I love gift cards)
          Sunday
          • $-8ish - Macys (returned a watch and got a pair of shoes...nothing like having a little left over)

            Friday's Daily Damages (1/7)

            • $25 - Groupon (Sel de la Terra, $25 for $50 worth of grub)
            • $6.50 - Bossa (shipping charges for my new passport wallet)
Aaron and I tried Sel de la Terra with a groupon a ways back and it was delish, so I figured this would be a nice little dinner for us.

              Thursday, January 6

              Thursday's Daily Damages (1/6)

              • $66.96 - Gap
              • $71.98 - Ann Taylor Outlet
Ummm, yeah so today wasn't one of restraint. I woke up to Maggie moaning in my face and jamming me in the eye with her nose like every morning, got up, and began to get ready for work. I have been in the office a lot more lately, what with all the snow and all, and a lot of days in the office means I am given a more frequent reminder of how much I hate all of my clothes. They just don't speak to me...and my work clothes might as well be mute I'm so bored with them.

So as you can see...I needed to put a life back in my closet...and I got a little carried away. Well not really, but sorta. Here's what I got...

              GAP
              • Black pants (desperately needed)
              • Pink cardigan (my plan was to put a little color in my life...this was the sole item with color. Fail)
              • Gray chunky sweater vest (going to be perfect with my legging obsession)
              Ann Taylor
              • Purple shirt (to go under sweater, and it has sparkly stripes...sounds ugly but isn't)
              • Navy blue button down sweater
              • Gray super-soft cords (I can't remember the last time I wore corduroys)
So I mean I got a decent amount of stuff for the amount I spent, granted maybe I didn't need it all...and the blood of the 4 year old in China that made some of it is definitely on my hands. Sigh. I am learning/have totally learned that it's incredibly difficult to find clothing made in the US. It's incredibly annoying.

Another shopping trip planned for sometime in the future will be to Banana Republic (more underage/underprivileged children's blood). A friend of mine is currently working a second job there and I must do my part to abuse her discount.

              Shopping Tips from Real Simple

My friend Courtney shared a Shopping guide from Real Simple with me thinking that it might make an interesting addition to my blog...and I'm happy to say she was right!

It gives you a run down of the best months (cheapest prices) to buy different items. For example, did you know the best month to buy a new TV is in March? Oh, really...you didn't? Well this is awkward....just jokes. I mean really, I'd be concerned if you did know that. Anyways, apparently new models are introduced at the International Consumer Electronics Show each January so the stores clear house in March to make room for the latest and great of the boob boxes.

So check it out. You may save yourself a buck.

              Moday - Wednesday Damages (1/3 - 1/5)

              Monday
              • $120 - Quinn Hair Salon (hair cutting time)
              • $17 - Eversave
There was deal on eversave that gets you $45worth or merchandise at Bossa for only $22 and I had some credit on my account for $5 (must have been for referring a friend) so I got the deal for $17! Here's what I plan on buying...

This will be perfect for my upcoming India trip. I tend to check for my passport and wallet compulsively when traveling b/c I'm paranoid that I'm going to lose it. Perhaps having everything in one place and not strewn through my over-sized bag will help with my plight.

                Tuesday
                • $1.25 - Diet Pepsi from the vending machine
                • $32.91 - Hess
                • $30 - Spatula paddle attachment for the kitchen aid.
                • $40 - Rue La La Stratton Mountain Deal of the Day

Aaron and I split the cost ($79) of a deal the La La was having on Stratton Mountain lift tickets. Aaron's mom bought us a weekend at an in right near the mountain, so we'll be up there this month anyways. I love getting deals on things I was going to spend money on anyways! Good timing Rue La La, good timing.

So a friend of mine got this beauty for Christmas but it doesn't fit on her machine, so I bought if off of her (she threw out the box in her excitement) so she can get a new one that fits.Hopefully it fits my machine, I'm not sure if I have the 4.5 or 5 quart machine, I think I have the 5 quart. We shall see. Fingers crossed.

                Wednesday
                • $1.25 - Diet Pepsi from the vending machine (getting a little carried away with the soda this week)

                Tuesday, January 4

                Exciting Additions

This weekend was a weekend of shopping....shocking I know. BUT what you don't know is that a lot of the purchases were what I consider to be purchases of conscious consumer. The lesser of these acquisitions was that of the ornament organizer and shoe rack from the Container Store. Both of these items were made in the USA, which I mentioned in my earlier post. I was pretty shocked by this, I mean even Rubbermaid is made over in China now! I just sort of assume at this point that anything plastic isn't made in the US, so it was a nice surprise when I checked and our Container Store purchases were domestically  made.

Another exciting purchase was our new Palm Restaurant butcher block/wine rack/utility table thing. I have no idea what to call this thing, I just know that I love it. We got it at Homegoods on sale for $400, a huge markdown for it's original price of $1,000. It's made from sustainably harvested wood all of which was grown in the northeast...so as far as wood products, that's about as sustainable as it gets aside from going out back, chopping down your own tree and trying to build the damn thing yourself as far as I'm concerned.

So you might be saying, okay so it was made sustainably, but did you really need it? Well the answer is, sort of. We were in need of a bit more counter space and I wanted a place for my fancy new Kitchen Aid mixer to live. So you can see that it was clearly a quasi-necessary purchase.

This isn't exactly what ours looks like, but it gives you an idea. Ours has a top drawer with a wooden handle, no cutting board or knife holder, and instead of the bottom shelf it has three open wine racks that pull in and out and a glass hanger to store glassware. It's freed up quite a bit of space in our cabinets, given the mixer and the booze a place to call home, and is also storing all wine/booze related accessories as well as all of my baking gizmos. Fabulous.

                Monday, January 3

                Weekend Damages (1/1 - 1/2)

                Welcome 2011!

                Saturday
                • $0
                Sunday
                • $47 - Crazy Jane's
Did a little pottery painting and got some ice cream with the little. All in all a successful outing...we'll have to wait and see how my planter comes out. I'm not expecting big things.

                Sunday, January 2

                Thursday & Friday Damages (12/30 - 12-31)

                Thursday
                • $15.39 - Pet World (orange vest for Maggie...we don't want her getting shot by a hunter)
                • $0.99 - TJMaxx (returned a pair of leggings I got and bought two additional pairs...difference of a dollar)
                Friday
                • $33.99 - Staples (new ink cartridges for the printer)
                • $35.04 - The Container Store (organizational goods)
                • $44.73 - BJs (got ourselves a fancy new membership...bought some rubber mats for Veruca, organic milk, new Brita filters, and a bunch of free bananas...yay for coupons)
It's worth noting that the containers from the container store were all made in the U.S. Fabulous!
